Sabrina Carpenter Gets Restraining Order Against Home Stalker

The "Espresso" Singer's Hollywood Hills Home Became a Nightmare — And It Started Back in April

Nobody should have to write the words "he physically grabbed the lever of my front door and forcefully pushed down." But that is exactly what Sabrina Carpenter had to put in a court petition — in detail, in her own words — because what happened at her Hollywood Hills home in late May was not a misunderstanding. It was terrifying.

On June 1, the 27-year-old Grammy winner was granted a temporary restraining order against a 31-year-old man named William Applegate, who she alleged had been stalking her home, attempting to force his way inside, and returning to her street multiple times even after police intervention.

According to court documents obtained by E! News, Applegate is now legally prohibited from coming within 100 yards of Carpenter, her sister Sarah Carpenter, and Sarah's partner George Smith — both of whom live with Sabrina at the residence. The order also bars him from approaching her workplace and vehicle. A hearing has been scheduled for June 17, at which point the temporary order is set to expire.

What Actually Happened on May 23

The incident that pushed Carpenter to file the petition took place on May 23, and the details she laid out in court documents are genuinely chilling.

According to her filing, Applegate did not simply show up at her front door. He deliberately trespassed onto a neighboring property first to bypass the security fencing around her home. Then he made his way directly to her front door, grabbed the door lever, and pushed down — actively trying to force his way inside.

"It is clear to me that his approach was deliberate, calculated and aggressive, which is deeply alarming," Carpenter wrote in her petition. After her security team stepped in, Applegate reportedly claimed he knew Carpenter personally and that she was expecting him. He remained on the property until the LAPD arrived and arrested him.

That alone would be enough to shake anyone. But it did not stop there.

He Came Back. Twice.

The day after the arrest, Applegate allegedly returned and sat in his car outside her home for approximately two hours before being sent away by her security guard. He appeared again on May 25, parked outside, and stayed until LAPD responded once more.

And here is the part that makes the whole situation even more unsettling: when Carpenter's security team reviewed the footage afterward, they discovered Applegate's car had first appeared in security camera recordings outside her home as far back as April 20. He had been watching her home for over a month before he tried to get inside.

"The totality of Applegate's conduct has caused me significant and ongoing fear for my personal safety and the safety of all individuals residing in my home," she wrote. Her petition also included photographs she said were of Applegate outside her residence, along with a declaration of support from the LAPD.

A Dangerous, Delusional and Irrational Fixation"

Carpenter did not mince words when describing what she believes is happening here. In her own petition, she wrote that Applegate's repeated insistence that he knew her and was expected by her is "indicative of a dangerous, delusional, and irrational fixation" on her.

"His pattern of stalking, trespassing, and surveillance has caused me severe and ongoing emotional distress," she added, "and I am in fear of what he may do if he is not restrained by this Court."

That is not the language of someone who is overreacting. That is someone who has been living in genuine fear inside her own home.

A Star Who Should Feel Safe

Sabrina Carpenter is currently one of the biggest names in pop music. Her Short n' Sweet tour sold out arenas. Her songs are everywhere. And earlier this year she was at Coachella performing in front of tens of thousands of fans. None of that fame should come with the cost of feeling unsafe in your own house.

Celebrity stalking cases have become an increasingly serious conversation in the entertainment industry, with artists from Taylor Swift to Harry Styles having dealt with similar situations over the years. The fact that Carpenter had to document every visit, every car sighting, and every doorknob grab in a formal court filing is a reminder that behind the glittery pop career is a real person who deserves basic safety and security.

The June 17 hearing will determine what happens next. Until then, the restraining order stands — and Sabrina Carpenter is taking no chances.
