Mika Abdalla and Jake Short Split After Five-Year Romance

Off Campus Star's Engagement Is Over — And the Timing Could Not Be More Awkward

Just one day after she started filming season two of her hit Prime Video show, Mika Abdalla's personal life took a very different turn. The Off Campus actress and her fiancé, fellow actor Jake Short, have called off their engagement after five years together. And yes, the news broke literally while she was back on set.

Talk about life not following the script.

A spokesperson for Mika confirmed the split to Us Weekly, releasing a statement that was professional, warm, and carefully worded: "Due to recent interest in Mika's personal life, it would feel remiss to not address that her and Jake are no longer together. They continue to support each other and remain on friendly terms, and kindly ask for privacy and respect."

Friendly terms. Right. That is the celebrity breakup equivalent of "it's complicated."

From a Hulu Set to a Ring — and Now This

Mika and Jake's love story actually started the way a lot of Hollywood romances do — on a set. The two met while filming Hulu's Sex Appeal back in 2021, and what started as a working relationship clearly became something much more. Four years later, Jake proposed, and the couple announced their engagement on Instagram to a wave of fan excitement.

Their last public appearance together? A basketball game, where by all accounts they looked completely loved up. Nobody saw this coming.

The Show Must Go On — Literally

Here is where the timing gets genuinely uncomfortable. Season two of Off Campus began filming just one day before the breakup news dropped. Mika plays Allie, and her on-screen love interest is Dean Di Laurentis, played by co-star Stephen Kalyn. So while her real-life engagement was quietly ending, she was walking onto a set to film a romance storyline.

That takes a certain kind of professionalism — or at least a very good acting coach.

Mika had actually spoken about filming season two with a lot of excitement just weeks earlier, telling the Hollywood Reporter: "I'm also so grateful for the way that I get to be going into this season. I'm with genuinely my best friends." She was referring to her castmates, including Belmont Cameli and Ella Bright, who she praised for setting the tone on season one.

She also shared with the outlet what she is most looking forward to exploring in the new episodes — specifically getting deeper into the emotional layers of Allie and Dean's relationship. "We see Allie and Dean as their exteriors a lot in season one," she said. "As actors, selfishly, both of us are really excited to get psychological."

Given everything happening in her personal life right now, that emotional depth might come a little more naturally than expected.

Heartbreak With a Support System

Whatever Mika is going through privately, she is at least not going through it alone. She has been vocal about how close she is with her Off Campus castmates, describing them as genuine friends rather than just colleagues. As she told Hello Magazine, being back on set feels like being surrounded by her best friends, which right now is probably exactly what she needs.

Season two of Off Campus, based on the bestselling books by Elle Kennedy, is currently in production. And if Mika Abdalla's real-life emotional range is any indication, her performance this season might just be her strongest yet.
