Mindy Kaling Opens Up About Her Weight Loss Journey
Look, celebrity weight loss is one of those topics that the internet simply cannot leave alone. And Mindy Kaling knows it better than most. She has been on the receiving end of body commentary for most of her career — first for looking a certain way, then for changing that look. Through all of it, she has somehow managed to stay grounded, honest, and refreshingly unbothered.

At 46 and as a single mom to three kids — Kit, 8, Spencer, 5, and Anne, 2 — Mindy's relationship with her body has shifted in a way that actually makes a lot of sense. It is less about how she looks and more about how long she plans to stick around for her children.
The Real Reason Behind the Transformation
In an interview with Bustle published in May, Mindy was straightforward about what drives her now. "When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons," she said. "Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes." She laughed and added that as a mother of three, she needs to "live at least 20 more years."
That is a very different conversation than the one the internet usually wants to have about celebrity bodies. But Mindy is not naive about the attention either. As she told E! News, she gets why people are fascinated. She consumes pop culture herself, and she understands that when someone you have followed for years looks different, it can feel personal.
"I know people are really interested in my body and the changes in my body," she told People back in 2023. "I think it's flattering — and sometimes it's just a little much."
She Has Been on Both Sides of the Criticism
What makes Mindy's story genuinely interesting is that she has not just been criticized for gaining weight. She has also been criticized for losing it — as if getting healthier was somehow a betrayal of fans who connected with her at a certain size.
She recalled a particularly painful moment early in her career when she was in a writers room in the mid-2000s and someone suggested that another character should tell hers that she could stand to lose 15 pounds. "This is my greatest insecurity and someone just called it out," she said on Good Morning America in 2021. "It's really devastating."
Years later, the scrutiny flipped in the other direction. But Mindy has found a way to hold both realities at once. As she told Bustle, "It's sometimes no fun when one of your favorite actors loses weight. You have an idea of what they were like when you grew attached to them." She gets it. She just refuses to let it run her life.
Twenty Miles a Week and a Complete Mindset Shift
Here is the actual work behind the transformation. According to People, Mindy has been logging around 20 miles a week of hiking and running, and she described it as "a big commitment" to her health. But it did not start there. After having her first child in 2018, she told E! News that the key was finding small windows and using them well.
"I will go on a two-mile walk after dropping my kid off at school and call a friend from high school to catch up on the phone," she explained. "It doesn't feel like I'm working out, but I am, and I enjoy that I get to socialize too."
The mindset around fitness changed too. In her twenties, she had very rigid ideas about what being fit meant — specific pace times, specific macros, a very narrow definition. Now she has let all of that go. "It took me a long time to realize that there are lots of different ways to be fit," she told E! News.
She has also added strength training, something she resisted for years because the focus back then was purely on being thin. Now that she has experienced firsthand what building muscle does for the body, she is a full convert.
No Scale, No Drama, Just Clothes That Fit
One of the most relatable things Mindy has said throughout all of this? She does not own a scale — or at least does not use one. "I don't weigh myself," she said on Today in 2022. "To me, the most amazing thing is that all my clothes kind of fit. It's so easy to get ready and that's great."
When it comes to food, she told Prevention in 2024 that she keeps it simple: more leafy greens, less red meat, minimal dairy. No crash diets. No dramatic restrictions. "Any kind of restrictive diet, it never really works for me," she explained. "I just eat less of it. I wish there was something more juicy or dynamic about the way that I've lost a little bit of weight, but that's the way I've done it."
She is also deliberate about when she sticks to her habits — not just when life is easy, but especially when things get stressful. Because that, she said, is when the worst choices tend to happen.
Feeling Confident, Finally
Perhaps the most striking part of everything Mindy has shared is how comfortable she sounds in her own skin right now — not because she hit some number or a certain dress size, but because she genuinely feels good.
"I'm feeling really confident in my body these days," she told People in 2023, "which is not something that I've been able to say for my whole life, unfortunately. I feel great."
Coming from someone who has spent decades navigating the impossible standards placed on women in Hollywood, that sentence lands differently. It is not a before-and-after story. It is a still-in-progress story about a woman who decided her health was worth the effort and her children were worth showing up for — and who refuses to let anyone else define what that looks like.
