Karol G Stuns at AMAs 2026 With a Rare Historic Award
Las Vegas does not do anything quietly, and neither does Karol G. The 35-year-old Colombian superstar pulled up to the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Monday night for the 52nd American Music Awards

wearing a cut-out dress that immediately reminded everyone why she is one of the most talked-about artists on the planet right now. But it was not just the outfit that had people buzzing. Karol arrived knowing she was about to receive one of the rarest honors in music award history.
An Award That Has Not Been Given Out Since 2009
This is not your standard "Best Latin Artist" trophy situation. According to Just Jared, Karol G is set to receive the International Artist Award of Excellence at this year's AMAs — an honor that has not been handed to anyone since Whitney Houston took it home back in 2009. That is seventeen years without a single recipient, because the award only gets handed out when the industry genuinely feels someone has earned it beyond any reasonable doubt.

The list of previous recipients puts the weight of this moment into perspective fast. Rolling Stone reported that the award has gone to Michael Jackson in 1993, Rod Stewart in 1994, Led Zeppelin in 1995, the Bee Gees in 1997, Aerosmith in 2001, Beyonce in 2007, and Whitney Houston in 2009. Karol G is now part of that company. Let that sink in.
Dick Clark Productions executive producers Barry Adelman and Alexi Mazareas said in a statement that Karol G has redefined what it means to be a global artist, adding that through her authenticity and powerful connection with fans around the world, she has helped bring Latin music to heights it had never reached before.
Three Nominations on Top of the Historic Honor
If a legendary award was not enough for one night, Karol also walked in with three regular nominations in her pocket. As Billboard reported, she is up for Best Female Latin Artist, Best Latin Song for "Latina Foreva," and Best Latin Album for her fifth studio record Tropicoqueta, which she released last June through Bichota/Interscope. The album had already earned a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album earlier this year, so the AMAs recognition feels like a natural continuation of a run that shows no sign of stopping.
Rolling Stone also noted that in 2025, the publication named her one of the Voices of the Year — a title that captures exactly what she has become in music right now.
A Red Carpet Moment Worth Talking About
Deadline and Hollywood Life both captured her arrival on the carpet, where Karol showed up in a sheer bralette top paired with a matching low-waisted skirt that had the cameras going. It was bold, it was confident, and it was completely on brand for a woman who has never once played it safe with fashion.
She was not the only major name making an entrance. According to Yahoo Entertainment, the red carpet also welcomed Hilary Duff as a presenter, Maluma as a performer, GloRilla, Tinashe, and plenty of others. Queen Latifah is hosting the night, making her return to the AMAs stage after more than 30 years away, which is its own kind of full-circle moment.
Taylor Swift leads all nominations this year with eight nods, followed closely by Morgan Wallen, Olivia Dean, Sabrina Carpenter, and Sombr with seven each. But tonight, the name on everyone's lips before the show even started was Karol G.
From Medellin to Music History
There is something genuinely moving about watching a woman from Medellin, Colombia stand in the same category as Michael Jackson and Beyonce when it comes to global impact. Karol G has not just crossed borders — she has completely dissolved them.
Headline Planet noted that she was also confirmed as a performer for the night, meaning she arrived on the carpet, picked up a historic award, and then got on a stage in front of millions. Just a regular Monday, apparently, when your name is Karol G.
