"I think people expect that Alec wanted somebody he could boss around," she told the outlet, "and we're on the same level together."

Alec, 68, has his own take on why it worked. When he met Hilaria — back when she was still Hilaria Thomas, an unknown yoga instructor in New York — he said he immediately recognized something different about her. "She was a hard worker and I really admired that," he said. "She's beautiful beyond measure, inside and out."

When Hilaria was asked about the actual secret behind making such an unlikely marriage last, her answer was surprisingly simple. "We just let each other be," she explained. "I think that's one of the reasons our relationship has gone on as long as it has, because we are polar opposites and so different."

News, Hilaria said those nights usually come down to dinner — either going out or her cooking at home, followed by the two of them catching each other up on their kids and their individual projects. News, and by June 30 of that same year they were married at the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral in Manhattan — Hilaria in a silk Amsale gown, Alec in Tom Ford.

Since then they have welcomed Carmen, 12, Rafael, 10, Leonardo, 9, Romeo, 8, Eduardo, 5, Maria Lucia, 5, and Ilaria, 3. Alec also shares daughter Ireland, 30, with ex-wife Kim Basinger — and Ireland, to her credit, was a bridesmaid at the wedding.
