Demi Lovato and Jutes: One Year of Marriage and Still Falling
May 25 marks exactly one year since Demi Lovato walked down the aisle in Santa Barbara and married the man she had been quietly falling for since a random studio session back in 2022. And if you were hoping for a typical "one year in, things have settled down" kind of update — that is not what this is.

Demi is still completely gone for this man. And honestly? Same, Demi.
It Started With a Crush She Could Not Hide
Before Jutes — real name Jordan Lutes — was her husband, he was just some guy who walked into a writing session for her album *Holy Fvck* in early 2022. Demi has since told the story multiple times because it is genuinely too good not to.
"I literally sat down in the studio and texted my best friends and was like, 'The hottest guy just walked in,'" she admitted on an August episode of *Chicks in the Office.* She had a crush immediately. He had no idea — or at least, he played it cool.
They wrote music together, became close friends, and for a while that was it. But Demi was going through one of the hardest stretches of her life at the time, and Jutes showed up for her in a way that went well beyond professional.
"I had just come out of treatment, and I was newly sober and raw with my emotions," she shared with *Who What Wear* in November. "He was there for me as a friend, helping me get through this deep depression I was in."
A Birthday Camping Setup That Changed Everything
The friendship-to-romance pivot happened in March 2023, on Jutes' birthday. According to Demi, she set up a camping scene in her own backyard — full setup, the whole thing — and by the end of the night, they were officially a couple.
She shared the story on *The Drew Barrymore Show* in 2024, and it has the kind of specificity that makes you believe it completely. This was not a grand Hollywood gesture. It was a backyard, a birthday, and two people who had been circling each other for months finally stopping.
By December that same year, Jutes was down on one knee with a pear-shaped diamond ring and a song he had written specifically for the proposal — called "Carry Me" — filled with Easter eggs from their time together. Demi told SiriusXM's Hits 1 that hearing it for the first time left her completely undone.
The Wedding That Made Everything Worth It
They married in Santa Barbara in May 2025, and Demi's description of it to *Vogue* is the kind of thing that makes cynics feel things against their will.
"I just felt loved," she said. "All that life has brought me to this moment, and it was more than worth it. It was so special being able to marry my best friend, my soulmate, and the love of my life."
She also said something that stood out — that she and Jutes do not complete each other, because they both did the individual work first to become whole on their own. That kind of language is rare. It is also the kind of foundation that actually holds.
One Year In and the Feeling Has Only Grown
This is where it gets almost unfairly sweet. Speaking to E! News in April, Demi said she genuinely thought her wedding day was the peak — that she could not possibly love someone more than she did in that moment.
"And then time goes by and you just form this connection that is so intimate and so fulfilling that you just fall completely more and more in love," she said.
Their first anniversary falls on a day when they are both separately on tour, which obviously is not ideal. But Jutes told E! News they are just going to pretend the day is a regular one, and the moment tour wraps, they will celebrate properly. It is a very them solution to a very musician problem.
Back in April at Madison Square Garden during her It's Not That Deep Tour, Demi brought Jutes out on stage and the two performed the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris" together — the song that played during their first dance at the wedding. The crowd lost it. Honestly, fair enough.
The Road That Led Here
Demi's relationship history has been well-documented over the years — long stretches with Wilmer Valderrama, a brief romance with Joe Jonas, and an engagement to Max Ehrich that ended publicly and painfully in 2020. She has been open about all of it, and equally open about the mental health struggles and sobriety journey that ran alongside it all.
What makes Jutes different, by every account she has given, is not just who he is but who she was when she finally met him. She had done the work. She was ready. And when the right person walked into that studio, she noticed.
One year of marriage, two people still on tour, and a love story that somehow keeps getting better. Happy anniversary, Demi.
