Kelly Ripa was noticeably missing from her own show this week, and it turns out there's a very real, very dental reason why. On the Monday episode of "Live with Kelly and Mark," husband and co-host Mark Consuelos stepped up to explain her absence, revealing that Ripa had just undergone gum graft surgery and was under strict doctor's orders to stay quiet.

Joined by guest co-host Kevin Jonas, Consuelos told viewers his wife sent her love before breaking the news himself, admitting it wasn't exactly a minor procedure. A gum graft involves taking tissue from elsewhere in the mouth, typically the palate, and using it to cover areas where the gums have receded and exposed the tooth roots underneath — not a simple in-and-out appointment by any measure.

According to Consuelos, Ripa had actually been putting the surgery off for years. Her dentist first suggested she get it done roughly five years ago, and at the time, she reportedly joked that she couldn't imagine still being on the air five years later. As it turns out, she was — and the procedure could no longer wait.

Part of her recovery includes total vocal rest, meaning no talking at all for the time being, along with a strict no-straws, soft-foods-only routine while everything heals. Despite the discomfort, Consuelos reassured audiences that his wife was handling it well, noting she has a notably high pain tolerance. Ripa is expected to return to her hosting duties within the week once she's cleared to speak again.

This isn't the first time the couple has turned their real-life medical moments into on-air banter. Back in 2024, Consuelos famously claimed his own foot surgery was more painful than any of Ripa's three C-section deliveries, a comment that didn't go over well with his co-host, who fired back with a pointed remark about how little he actually knows about recovering from childbirth.

For two hosts who've built a chunk of their show's chemistry around teasing each other's aches and pains, this latest dental detour is just the newest chapter — one that fans will likely hear all about once Ripa's back behind the desk and cleared to talk again.
